Centrifugal Pumps

Centrifugal pumps have great application in industrial and residential properties for pumping water. They are machines that move liquids with the help of kinetic energy stored in the motor. Though, the main function of using these pumps is to move water, but they are also used in sewage, petroleum and chemical industries. These are machines that cause liquid to flow and have become very popular down the years. Its popularity is mainly because of the comparatively recent development of high speed electric motors, steam turbines, and internal combustion engines. They are mostly used as an industrial pump because of the conversion of the motor to rotational energy. Centrifugal pump has a very simple construction and gives a steady delivery of liquid. There is a complete absence of valves in this machine. It can very easily handle liquids that have high proportions of suspended solids in them.

What are self priming centrifugal pumps?

Self priming centrifugal pumps are pumps that free itself of air when it becomes air-bound and will continue pumping without attention. These pumps work better when volatile liquid is used in chemical processes. They function to transfer vapor from the suction side of the impeller to the discharge. When this is done in a long run, a vacuum is created in the suction line and the atmospheric pressure on the surface of the liquid pushes the liquid into the pump. Mainly two schemes are used to achieve vapor transfer. One is recirculation priming and the other is diffuser priming.

Basic information on recirculation and diffuser priming

Recirculation priming of self priming centrifugal pumps uses a check valve between the suction passage and the liquid reservoir on the pump discharge. When there is air in the passage, the valve opens and the liquid from the reservoir recirculates back through the impeller, taking a few air bubbles along on each trip. This helps in exhausting the air in the suction line. This allows the liquid to fill in the suction line and the closing of the check valve.

On the other hand, diffuser priming is developed to avoid the check valve or any other problem that arises in recirculation priming. This type of priming machine is considered more efficient and is most widely used these days. In this process, the liquid does not return back from the reservoir but combines with the air at the circumference of the impeller.

Tips to use self priming centrifugal pumps

Self priming machines require an initial fill of liquid. They need something to recirculate. While using these pumps, you must prevent excessive back pressure on the discharge of the pump. If in case, there is a problem, you can get out of this by placing an air release valve in the discharge line between the pump and the check valve. This will help in letting the air escape. While buying this pump, prefer buying one that has a mechanical shaft seal. Air leaking in through the stunning box makes priming difficult. Ensure that there is no leak in the suction line as it will reduce or eliminate the pump’s self priming capability. If you follow all these tips, your pumps will keep on providing good function for years to come.

Look for a good centrifugal pump

If you want that the pump should offer you good services for a long time, you must prefer buying a good pump. A good quality pump will have superior components and will withstand the test of time. So, be sensible to buy pumps that will offer you good services for a long time.
